Choosing a Guard Dog

We are all keen to make sure that our houses and our families are kept safe and for some us this means buying a family pet whose ultimate job is a guard dog; but how do you go about selecting a family guard dog for your home, especially one that will learn friend from foe, especially if you have young children running around.

Purpose

You need to know the purpose for which you are buying a family guard dog and what their job will be as this will ultimately determine the breed of dog you choose. Some dogs are known as ‘intimidators’ and are dogs with deep enough and loud enough barks that they will actually frighten any would be intruders way. Then you have attack dogs that may not necessarily be large but will, if given the opportunity, go after and attempt to attack any intruders.

Research

Make sure you do your research. There is plenty of content on the web and in libraries which will allow you to do your research and find out about the behaviours of certain breeds of dog. It is important to remember that the dog won’t just be guarding your home, but will be a member of your family, so make sure you are equipped and prepared to look after the dog too.

Personal Life

You must factor in your personal life. Different breeds require different types of attention and care; some may require lots of space to exercise, others lots to eat and other lots of grooming. You need to make sure whatever their requirement is, you can accommodate.

Training

If you are going to buy an attack dog, dogs like Rottweiler’s, Pit Bulls, Dobermans and German Shepherds then you must be aware that these dogs need specific and professional training. You should not expect to be able to train these dog’s yourself, especially if you have young children around. These dog’s need to be taught from a very early age the ability to identify who is an intruder and who is not, especially as you do not want them attacking your friends or other members of your extended family.

Protect Your Dog

While your dog is a line of defence it is important to make sure your dog is protected too. They should be a last resort deterrent to any intruder. First and foremost you have all the basics in place like sturdy locks on all your doors and windows.

Although a family guard dog is a great security measure for your home, your first priority should be securing the house itself. Latham’s Steel Doors specialise in steel front doors that look like conventional doors, whilst being extremely resistant to vandalism and break-ins.
