How to Make a Cat Insurance Claim

Statistical data shows that one in every three policy holders makes at least one cat insurance claim per year. This just shows how useful it is to have an insurance cover. In general, making claims is fairly easy. It should not take you much time or effort. Use this guide to find out how to do it.

Below you will find general instructions on how to make a cat insurance claim. These particular instructions are for claiming on the vet fees cover benefit of your policy. Claiming on other cover benefits involves the same procedure. The only difference is in the details which you have to enter. For instance, if you claim on your vet fees cover, you will have to provide details on your pet’s injury or illness. When claiming on third party liability cover, you will have to describe the accident and the property damages and/or injuries incurred by third parties.

Here are the step-by-step cat insurance claim instructions:

Step 1

Make the cat insurance claim as soon as your pet is diagnosed with a condition and the vet recommends treatment. Insurance companies usually process claims in seven working days so you would not want to wait too long before you can use the money which you are entitled to in a case of an emergency. In general, insurers allow you to claim on your policy within one year of the event, which in this case is the diagnosis of the condition. Keep in mind that some companies set shorter periods. You may be required to make a claim within 9 or even 6 months of the event.

Step 2

Obtain the cat insurance claim form which you have to fill out. You can get a form from any office of the insurance company. At present, most companies have downloadable online forms as well. Make sure that you pick the one for the specific cover benefit which you will claim on. In this case, this will be the vet fees cover form. Download it and print it.

Step 3

Enter your policy number in the designated field on the cat insurance claim form. This number is printed on your policy certificate. It should be clearly visible.

Step 4

Enter your name, address and contact details. Make sure that all details are correct as the insurer may contact you by phone or by email regarding your claim.

Step 5

Enter all necessary details about your pet. The typical cat insurance claim form has sections for your cat’s name, birth date, gender, and breed and microchip number.

Step 6

Describe the illness or injury your pet is suffering from. You usually have two to three lines on the cat insurance claim form to do this. You should state the diagnosis that your vet has made and describe the symptoms that the cat has. You have to enter the date on which the animal first experienced the symptoms.

Step 7

Include any relevant documents regarding your pet’s medical history and the veterinary practices it has been registered with, if required by your insurer. Most companies ask you to provide a full clinical history of the cat when making your first cat insurance claim. This speeds up the processing as the company will not have to investigate the medical history of your pet. The issuer of your policy may also ask you to provide the contact details of any clinical practices your cat has been previously registered with for the purpose of making the processing of the claim faster.

Step 8

Inform the insurer to whom they should pay the cat insurance claim and place your signature. You have two payment options here. You can choose to receive the money yourself. You can also have the payment made directly to the vet. If your vet agrees to be paid directly by the company and not by you, then you can go for the latter option. Just consider the fact that the amount which will be paid by the insurer is the claimed amount minus the excess fee. The fee is automatically deducted from the total sum. This means that you will either have to pay the size of the excess fee to your vet or to the insurer so that the veterinarian receives the whole amount.

Step 9

Provide the best cat insurance claim form to your vet and have them fill out the fields they are responsible for. They will have to provide their contact details and provide medical information on the condition which your pet is suffering from. It is the responsibility of your vet to enter the amount of money they have charged you and enclose a full invoice. They must confirm that they are entitled to receiving payments directly from the insurer, if applicable. They have to sign the form as well.

Step 10

Go over the cat insurance claim form and make sure that the information on it is complete and correct. Make copies of all documents that you will send to your insurer. These include the form, the invoice from your vet and any other documents related to your pet’s medical history.

Step 11

Send the cat insurance claim to the issuer of your policy. This can be done by mail or by fax. Expect to hear from the company within seven working days.
